Our Services
Physiotherapy involves diagnosis and treatment of problems affecting nerves, muscles and joints. At Yasp we specialise in improving persistent, long term problems such as pain, stiffness, and loss of movement or mobility.
We are passionate about the benefits of physical activity for both body and mind. But we realise that some people face overwhelming barriers to activity. We have a track record of success in working with people to overcome these barriers, allowing them to achieve their full potential.
Neurological Conditions
Margaret specialises in treating neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke or neuropathy. She has contributed to the leadership and publication of research into exercise for multiple sclerosis and has developed effective exercise programmes for neurological conditions that have been replicated elsewhere in the UK.
We can help a wide range of neurological conditions using a variety of treatment approaches including: exercise, functional electrical stimulation, vestibular rehabilitation, sensory dynamic orthoses, and pain management. For people with MS these treatments are funded by the MS Society, with no cost to the patient. Contact us to find out if we can help with your specific problem.
Persistent Pain
At Yasp we realise that persistent pain can often be distressing and have a huge impact on your ability to get the most from life. We will work hard to understand your experience of pain and listen to your story with compassion.
We understand that pain is individual to the person experiencing it and so your goals, aims and treatment will be tailored to your needs. Pain science can often seem daunting and confusing so we aim to help you understand how pain happens and ways you can help yourself.
Long standing pain can happen for many reasons so please contact us to find out whether we can help.
Migraine Prevention
Migraine is more than just an intense headache; frequent migraine can severely disrupt everyday life. National guidelines (NICE, SIGN and British Association for the Study of Headache) recommend trying acupuncture for prevention of migraine, and research shows that around 6 out of 10 people with migraine gain significant benefit from acupuncture. At Yasp both Paula Wishart and Margaret Gear provide this service. Click here for more information.
Dizziness
Dizziness or vertigo can vary from occasion spinning sensations to constant and disabling symptoms. The causes of dizziness can be complex and may include problems with the structures of the inner ear, or problems with the structure or function of the nerves that control balance. Specialist vestibular rehabilitation therapy can improve or cure many of the most common causes of dizziness, but should only be undertaken by a specialist therapist with appropriate training. Margaret Gear has specialised in neurology for most of her career, and has 15 years of experience in treating vestibular disorders. Click here for more information.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine stainless steel needles into the skin. It has been used in China for over 2000 years, and increasingly in Western medicine since the 1970s. It can be used for a wide range of common health problems to reduce pain, e.g. NICE recognises acupuncture’s benefits for migraines and tension headaches.
Acupuncture can be combined with other physiotherapy treatments such as exercise, manual therapy, relaxation techniques, and modern science techniques for managing pain.
At Yasp both Paula and Margaret are qualified in delivering acupuncture for pain relief. Contact us for more information.
Muscle and Joint Problems
At Yasp we are experienced in offering assessment and treatment for a wide range of muscle and joint problems throughout the body. Our advice and treatment will be individual to suit your needs whether it is a new or a longer standing problem.
We aim to help you find ways to feel confident about movement and improve your strength and flexibility to allow you to reach your goals. This may be through specific exercise or just ways of moving differently and having the confidence to use your body as you need to.
We may use a variety of treatments to help you but we will always aim to decide the best way forward together.
Please contact us to see if we can help you.
Rehabilitation
At Yasp we have many years of experience in successful rehabilitation for a very wide range of movement and pain problems. We have not listed them all as the list was too long so please contact us to see if we can help with your specific problem.
